Paint Sheens
For those that don't know, here's a little reference guide to help you better understand when making a decision for your upcoming painting project. As a general rule, you should always apply 2 coats of paint to your walls, doors, and trim in order to achieve the best finish.
Flat or Matte - Flat paints have the least amount of sheen. The advantages of this are that the paint hides imperfections well and the painted surface creates very little glare. The disadvantage is that is not washable. If you rub the surface with a damp sponge, the paint may come off on the sponge. For these reasons, flat paint typically is used only on the ceilings or in closets. (Flat paints are not very washable.)
Eggshell - This type of paint has a moderate amount of sheen so it hides imperfections somewhat and produces relatively little glare. These characteristics make it the standard choice for the main living areas. (Eggshell paints are washable.)
Satin - This paint is very similar to eggshell. The only difference is it's about a half-step up in glossiness. (Satin paints are washable.)
Semi-gloss - This option is used on the walls in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, and other similar areas that need the high washability and moisture-resistance. Semi-Glosses can also be used to paint baseboards, doors, door jambs, window trim and cabinets (Semi-Gloss paints are washable.)
Gloss - Gloss paint is primarily used on baseboards, doors, door jambs, window trim and cabinets because it's tough and highly washable. It also reflects a lot of light, which makes your detailed surfaces really shine. (Gloss paints are washable.)
High Gloss - High Gloss paint can be used for residential projects but is typically used on commercial and industrial type jobs. High Gloss paints aren't really necessary in residential homes. (High Gloss paints are washable.)
