Schmere & Whitewash
What is German Schmear
When it comes to giving your home that old-world charm, nothing quite does the trick like a German schmear. Also known as “mortar wash” or “slurry coat,” This technique has been around for centuries and holds up to the test of time. German Schmear is a technique that involves applying a thin layer of mortar over the bricks on your fireplace. The first thing you’ll notice with the German Schmear technique is that it gives your fireplace an instant makeover. It’s a great way to achieve a new look without having to replace any brickwork. Another big advantage of German Schmearing is that it can help to disguise any imperfections in the brickwork. If your fireplace has any cracks or chips, they will be much less noticeable once the mortar has been applied. If you want a more rustic feel, you can leave the bricks unpainted. Or if you prefer a cleaner look, you can paint the bricks before applying the mortar.
What is Whitewash
Whitewashing is a technique of applying thin paint to brick services. Whitewashing covers the brick with a translucent white coat and allows the texture of the brick to show through, while covering most of the under toning colors. This technique is most popular with homeowners.
What is Limewash
Limewashing is a technique of painting bricks that has been around for a very long time. It uses slaked lime mixed with water to create a wash that is applied to the bricks. Limewash does not completely cover the bricks like paint does, but rather it creates a weathered look that allows some of the brick texture to show through. The one major difference between limewash and whitewash is that a limewash will last a lot longer, which is important from the exterior standpoint. But if you're doing interior bricks then whitewashing is the cheaper way to go and will last for years, with little to no maintenance.
So, are you tired of your old gloomy brick fireplace, are you ready to turn that dull room into a bright cheerful place that people enjoy spending time in? If so, then any one of these 3 techniques will instantly brighten up your entire room, adding a whole new atmosphere to your family's living space!
